There’s no better place to go sightseeing of Portland in southern Maine than the Portland Observatory. Built in 1807, The Portland Observatory is the last remaining maritime signal tower in the country. With a ‘lantern’ P&J Dolland Achromatic Refracting Telescope and flag signals, the observatory would provide communication between the shore and land a few hours before incoming ships reached the docks. The telescope had mysteriously disappeared back in 1939. Which can only mean one thing: magic! Or theft.
