When contemplating the romantic get-away with your sweetheart for Valentine’s Day, one doesn’t always consider escaping to southern Maine. But don’t be surprised to be contradicted by the splendor of southern Maine in the winter. Maine winters accommodate all types of love birds and their interests.
Before I divulge any ideas as a Maine insider, let me tell you a romantic story. A few years ago, a friend of mine was surprised with a thoughtful Valentine’s Day gift right here in Maine. Before her boyfriend treated her out to dinner, he brought her to a secluded pond a few towns away in southern Maine. Hiding a thermos of hot chocolate and ice skates in his trunk, he surprised her with a day of ice skating. He had even shoveled the snow himself that morning.
The point of this story is to demonstrate that sometimes, the best gifts are those that require only effort and benevolence. How special can you feel when every year you get cheap boxed chocolates, hackneyed Valentine’s Day cards, and silly stuffed teddy bears all of which were found in one holiday themed aisle at Wal Mart? I can already anticipate the answer: at least I got chocolate.
Nothing says you’re special than planning a day of outdoor activities. Take your partner ice skating; or find a few local trails for cross country skiing or snowshoeing. For more outdoor winter ideas, check out our blog.
For a weekend, get away, stay at a local lodge. Groupon always has cheap offers on lodges and inns. Enjoy a romantic escape in Kennebunk with luxury lodging and a spa service voucher available for the entire month of February.
You can never go wrong making something special yourself. And what better thing to make than something you can eat! Do your homework and research Valentine’s Day recipies. Or, make your own V Day card. Remember crafting Valentine’s Day cards in class? All you need is some construction paper, a glue stick, crayons, and anything glittery. Anyone will be happy to be your Valentine when you made something yourself–even if it isn’t good.

One thing to keep in mind: every day is a gift; show your valentine your appreciation more than once a year.
